Armenia is an epic land. Armenia is one of the ancient countries with a long, great and at times tragic history. Beautiful mountainous landscapes, numerous cultural and historical monuments of Armenia would never leave one cold!
The Armenian art of manuscript illumination survived 14 centuries, from the Vth till the XIXth century. Starting from the Vth century, after the creation of the Armenian alphabet by Mesrop Mashtots in 405, Armenia experiences the flowering of literature, both translated and original. The boom was soon reflected in the art of the miniature.

“At the foot of Ararat”, an exposition devoted to Boris Piotrovsky’s 100th anniversary, opened in the state Ermitage of St.Petersburg, Russia. Academician Boris Piotrovsky was a celebrated archaeologist, orientalist, founder of the Russian Urartology, who studied archeology of Caucasus most of his life, and director of the Ermitage from 1908 till 1990.

The whole territory of Armenia is divided into 10 provinces or, as they are called in Armenian, marz’es. Armenian capital Yerevan is not included in any marz and it has a special administrative status as a capital city.
