Number of tourists, visited Armenia in the first half of 2008, increased by 13,3% in comparison to the first half of 2007.
According to the head of the tourism department of the Ministry of Economy of Armenia Mekhak Apresian, 207 479 tourists visited Armenia in January-June 2008 against 183 110 last year.
The total amount of money spent by the tourists equals 165 million drams (about 540 000 USD), which is 20 million drams more than last year.
Despite the fact that most of the incoming tourists are representatives of the Armenian Diaspora, who come to visit their historical motherland, a great number of visitors do not have Armenian roots. Armenia is mainly visited by tourists from Russia, France, Germany, USA, Canada, Japan, UK and Czech Republic.
Analysts consider Armenian historical and cultural monuments and nature to be the main objects attracting tourists.
In this connection ecotourism becomes one of the most demanded sphere of the Armenian tourism and economy. Ecotourism is already developing into one of the most popular type of tourism in Armenia, followed by agrotourism and ethnotourism.
